Higher Education and Research, Facts and Figures presents an annual overview, backed up by figures, of developments within the French system, its resources and outcomes. Wherever the data permit, an international comparison is provided. A double page is devoted to each of the 49 themes, including a summary of the latest available data along with graphs, tables and comments.

The pass rate was stable for Bachelor's degree programmes, with 40% of students graduating in 3 or 4 years, as well as for University technology diplomas (DUT), where 3 out of 4 students graduated in 2 or 3 years. The pass rate, which correlates strongly with the type of baccalauréat held, does not include qualifications obtained following course reorientations outside universities. The pass rate for Master's degrees was 65% in 2 or 3 years, demonstrating a constant increase.

This summary note presents the main indicators for the trajectories and pass rates for University students: rates of transition from L1 to L2 (first to second years of a Bachelor's degree) and from M1 to M2 (first to second years of a Master's degree), rates of obtaining a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree and University technology diploma (DUT). It is accompanied by the publication of these indicators broken down per university (see box). This information is published for the third consecutive year. The results for the 2014 session should be available in the second quarter of 2016.

The 6th edition of Higher Education and Research, Facts and Figures provides an annual overview, backed up by figures, of the French higher education and research system, with its changes, resources and outcomes. These data are provided by the statistical departments of various Ministries, for example the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the Ministry of Education and the Ministries for the Economy and Finance, but also from other organisations such as the Centre for Study and Research in Training and Education Policy, the National Observatory of Student Life, the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, the Science and Technology Observatory, and the OECD.
91% of young Master's graduates from 2008 who decided to end their studies after obtaining this diploma were in a job thirty months after joining the professional world. The percentage was the same for the small number graduating with a University technology diploma delivered by the IUT (¦Diplôme universitaire de technologie - ¦DUT) who were in the same position and for 92% of the much larger group with a vocational degree who fulfilled the same conditions. Some Master's graduates had more difficulty finding work, or had terms of employment that were less favourable. This was the case for humanities and arts graduates, for graduates from a less privileged social background, or for women. In 44% of cases, the job that Master's graduates were doing thirty months after obtaining their diploma was not located in the same region as their university. The Île-de-France region alone receives 30% of such graduates, while 15% of them have a job abroad.
